Defragmenting Windows
I’ve been a nice Windows user since Windows 95 and have always defragmented my drives. I’ve used free defragment software’s like the Windows Integrated Defragment and Smart Defrag. Today my new HP Z400 Workstation started to feel sluggish. It’s only a few weeks old but already sluggish… This can’t be true. I know it’s running Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008 developer edition and a few not so remarkable processes.
Anyhow, a few weeks should just not make a workstation sluggish. The workstation has Vista 64 installed and has 8Gb RAM so it should more or less be flying.
So I thought I’d google around and see what I find on defragment software’s. What I found was interesting. Smart Defrag got kicked down as it was no better than the integrated defragment tools. I saw Diskeeper got great reviews everywhere. Going to their website I noticed they have a 30 day full trial so I decided to grab the Pro Premier with HyperFast version and give it a run for it’s money.
First of all I set it up to defrag automatically. I don’t (yet) have a SSD drive so I let Diskeeper defrag all my Windows drives. After that I selected boot time defrag and chose to defragment the paging file and the master file table(MFT).
That was yesterday. This morning when I fired up my workstation I got a notice it’s going to start the defragmentation so I sat back and waited(took some time).
I really didn’t think the difference between one and another defragmentation software could be this big. I’m really amazed how much faster my workstation now runs.
The price of the Pro Premier with HyperFast edition is quite high, for a defragment software that is, 124,95$ but I really think this might be worth it. I’ve never seen a performance boost as easy to accomplish as this one. To bad I didn’t measure performance to get an before and after value.
My advice to you. If your computer feels sluggish, download Diskeeper Pro Premiere and give it a try. Be sure to let it defragment your page files etc to get everything out of your trial. There really isn’t much to loose, if your computer doesn’t perform better after the defragmentation you have lost nothing. If it does, maybe you’ll feel as amazed as I did.

Wait what? You bought a new workstation? Haha! I knew you couldn’t live with just a iMac.
But why the heck do you run Vista in it my friend?
Btw, Defragging with the bundled defragging software in Windows has long been known to be useless…
I could live with “just” a iMac, and the iMac is still my main computer.
Why I run Vista, because it came preinstalled and I haven’t had the energy to upgrade.
And yes, we all know the bundled defragging software isn’t good. But I had the illusion that something like Smart Defrag would be at least marginally better. I was wrong there.
