If you try to solve problems and do read at least some documentation most will try to help you. If you don't try and just start asking questions you will probably be ignored. The first thing I saw when trying to install my first distro? Kernel Panic :D Now I have dual boots on all the computers I work with (windows and Ubuntu) and I can pretty much survive with the basic commands only. The thing I loved most about my experience with Linux was how fast my Linux savvy friends offered to teach me new tricks :) I wanted to learn Linux to show I could to the testing and tech support guys who treated me as if I was a technologically impaired girl.
